Polaris ATVs were first produced in Roseau, Minnesota in 1985. Today three locations produce Polaris ATVs and they are located in Roseau Minnesota, Spirit Lake Iowa and Osceola Wisconsin. The Roseau, Minnesota and Spirit Lake Iowa locations are where final assembly is completed. Polaris produces ATVs 220 days out of the year. Since it's beginning in 1985, Polaris has produced over two million ATVs.
Polaris became the first company located in North America to produce ATVs. The first Polaris ATVs were the three-wheeled Scrambler and the four-wheeled Trailboss. Polaris used it snowmobile technology in manufacturing ATVs. Their ATVs featured an automatic transmission instead of a manual gearbox found on other maker's ATVs. Polaris built 1,700 Scramblers before they were retired in 1986.
The Trailboss began production in 1986 and was the first 4-wheeled ATV produced by Polaris. The Trailboss featured an automatic Polaris variable transmission, long travel rear suspension, MacPherson strut front suspension, all-wheel disc brakes and a full floorboard. The Trailboss is still being sold today. In 1987, Polaris offered brakes that had been improved and replaced manual 4-wheel drive with automatic 4-wheel drive.
In 1995, Polaris began producing the Sportsman, the best selling ATV of all time. Through 2004, over 715,000 Sportsmans had been sold. In 2001, the Sportsman model was offered with its largest engine, a 683cc model.
The Sportsman 800 Twin EFI was introduced in 2005 and was the most powerful and largest ATV in the industry at the time. It featured the industry's best selling automatic transmission, the Polaris variable transmission. Other selling points included on demand true all-wheel drive, Polaris' independent rear suspension and an integrated rear toolbox with front storage. Other features available on the Sportsman were a single level all-wheel hydraulic brakes and dual exhaust. Pure Polaris lock and ride accessory racks, engine braking system and 26-inch PTX radial tires came standard on the Sportsman 800 Twin EFI. Polaris and the Sportsman 800 have won several "ATV of the Year Awards" including Field and Streams' in 2005.
Polaris was the first company to offer key features that are now standard on ATVs offered by other makers. Some of these features include automatic transmission, single lever braking, electronic fuel injected 4X4, on demand all-wheel drive and electronically locking rear differential.
