Honda ATV History - scroll down for manual links
The history of the Honda ATV began in 1967, when American Honda wanted a product that could be sold by dealers during the winter months. Motorcycle sales typically decreased during the winter and the idea of the first ATV was born. Honda Research and Development, lead by Osamu Takeuchi, was assigned the task of building on this new concept.
In the beginning, the engine from a Honda ST 70 motorcycle was used. This engine was a 70cc four-stroke single-cylinder. The prototype ATV featured a rear axel that was extended to be used with cultivator wheels. The design had a single wheel in the front with two rear driving wheels.
Takeuchi decided on low-pressure tires for the prototype after viewing high-floatation tires on the American Invention called the Amphi-Cat. The tires that were decided upon where 22-inch tires that would be inflated to 2.2psi. With the use of the new tires, it was discovered that the 70cc engine was not strong enough. A 90cc engine with a four-speed gearbox was then decided upon. After extensive testing, a thumb throttle was added instead of the traditional twist grip used on motorcycles.
The first Honda AVT was introduced to America in 1970. The US90 boasted a seven horsepower engine with a four-speed with automatic clutch. The selling price of the US90 was $595. Honda trademarked the name ATC later that year and the US90 was renamed ATC90. The ATC was produced in three models throughout the 1970's. The ATC70 was a less powerful model for younger rides. The ATC110 was introduced in 1979 after buyers were requesting a more power model. The year 1975 brought about fabric carcasses and steels hubs for the tires as well as plastic fenders. The ATC185 was introduced in 1980 and featured 25-inch tires, five-speed transmission and 180cc four-stroke engine. Honda introduced the ATC200E; know as Big Red, in 1982. It featured a more powerful 192cc engine with a five-speed dual-range gearbox.
The first racing ATC was released in 1981. The ATC250R was the world's first two-stroke manufactured for high performance. In 1984, Honda released its first four-wheeled ATV, the TRX200. Honda also began producing its first four-wheel drive ATV, the FourTrax350 4X4. In 1998, Honda introduced its Electric Shift Program on the Foreman ES, a 450cc ATV. Honda continues to be a leader in the ATV world by creating new products and improving existing models.
